Iowa 280

Original northern terminus: Newhall
Original southern terminus: US 30, later US 30/218, in southern Benton County
Paving history: Unpaved at designation, the road was paved in 1955.
Replaced by: IA 287; the number has since been used for I-280.

History
Designated: June 4, 1935, as a 5-mile spur from US 20 northward to Dunkerton.
Paving history: Unpaved at designation, the original segment was paved in 1940. All future extensions were paved.
Major alignment changes:
  • September 19, 1958: Extended westward along Independence Avenue east of downtown Waterloo after US 20 was relocated along a southerly route. According to the Highway Commission meeting notes of October 14, the west end of IA 281 was at US 63; however, it was truncated to the intersection of East 7th & Franklin Streets at some point after that.
  • 1980: Extended north of Dunkerton along County Road V3C and the former IA 190 (II)
  • 1983: Segment along Independence Avenue was turned over to the city of Waterloo
  • 1984: Relocated to run due southward from Dunkerton to US 20 along County Road V51; the old segment became an extension of County Road D20.
  • 1988: East-west segment between the Waterloo city limits and V51 was restored

    Paving history: The entire road was paved at the time of designation.
    Replaced by: County Roads W14 and E44 plus Main Street in Newhall (in 1980); County Road W14 (at decommissioning). This replaced IA 280.

    Paving history: Unpaved at designation, the road was upgraded from bituminous to paved in 1970.

    Iowa 289 (II)
    Designated: 2000 Decommissioned: February 18, 2003
    This was the unsigned designation for two former segments of US 61, totaling about 2.3 miles, in Lee County that were abandoned after four-lane construction in 2000 and 2001. One segment was west of Fort Madison where US 61 makes a southwestward turn, and the other was north of Montrose. On December 17, 2002, the Lee County Board of Supervisors accepted jurisdiction of both segments; the DOT approved the transfer on February 18, 2003.     Replaced by: County Road Z36. IA 291 appeared in the Rand McNally Road Atlas as late as 2009, but it was removed from the 2010 edition.

    Iowa 296 (II)
    This number was given to two former segments of IA 28 after a realigned segment opened on August 11, 2000. One of them was bisected by Army Post Road in Des Moines, near the Register's production facility; the other was bisected by County Line Road in Norwalk. (The IA 5 freeway broke it into two segments.) Des Moines took over its share in 2001. The segment in Norwalk still appeared on the Iowa DOT's Polk and Warren county maps as late as the January 1, 2010, editions, but it was removed from the DOT's map of Norwalk dated January 25, 2011.

    Original northern terminus: Alexander
    Original southern terminus: IA 10 (later IA 3) in western Franklin County
    Paving history: There were no paved segments.
    Replaced by: Extension of IA 107
    Iowa 297 (II)
    Designated: 1940 Decommissioned: July 1, 2003
    Original northern terminus: US 63 in downtown Waterloo; it was moved to Raymond in 1958.
    Original southern terminus: Evansdale (which incorporated in 1947); it was extended southward to Gilbertville along a diagonal gravel road in 1942.
    Paving history: The original segment was paved at the time of designation, but the extension to Gilbertville was gravel until it was paved in 1962.
    Major alignment change: In 1958, IA 297 was straightened to become a north-south spur between US 20 and Gilbertville, on or sometime after US 20 was relocated on September 19 of that year; this part of US 20 became Dubuque Road in 1986 after US 20 was moved onto a new freeway segment.
    Replaced by:
  • Local roads (Lafayette Street and Gilbertville Road) in Waterloo, Evansdale, and Elk Run Heights (original segment); this segment was an unsigned state primary road that was designated as "Alternate 297" until at least 1961, according to Highway Commission records.

  • County road, now numbered R38, and an unnumbered gravel county road eastward to US 69 (in 1958)
