Iowa 240
Designated: May 27, 1931 Decommissioned: July 1, 2003
Original western terminus: Royal
Original eastern terminus: US 71 in central Clay County
Paving history: Unpaved at designation, the entire road was paved in 1942.
Replaced by: Main Street in Royal, County Road M36, and County Road B40 (majority of the road)

Original northern terminus: US 34/275 (Main Street & 9th Avenue) in Council Bluffs
Original southern terminus: US 34/275 southeast of Council Bluffs, near the Iowa School for the Deaf
Paving history: There were no paved segments.
Replaced by: IA 192. This short-lived highway, referenced in Highway Commission meeting notes, followed the route that IA 86 (I) followed in the 1920s. If this highway was signed, it would rank among the shortest-lived highways in Iowa history.

Designated: July 8, 1931 Decommissioned: 1980
Original northern terminus: IA 10 (later IA 3) in southeastern Bremer County
Original southern terminus: Readlyn
Paving history: Unpaved at designation, the entire road was paved in 1963.
Replaced by: Local road (it entered through Quarter and Lobeck Avenues)

Original northern terminus: Silver City
Original southern terminus: US 34 in central Mills County
Paving history: Unpaved at designation, the entire road was paved in 1960.
Replaced by: County Road L55

Original northern terminus: US 71/IA 175 on the east edge of Lake View

Iowa 244 (I)
Designated: July 8, 1931 Decommissioned: 1980
Original northern terminus: IA 4 (later US 59)
Original southern terminus: Henderson
Paving history: Unpaved at designation, the entire road was paved in 1956.
Major alignment changes: On November 23, 1938, IA 244 became a spur from Henderson eastward to the relocated US 59 after US 59 was straightened between Oakland and Emerson.
Replaced by: County Road H12 and M21 (it made a turn to the south before ending)

Original northern terminus: IA 191 in Neola
Original southern terminus: County Road L55 south of I-80 (exit #23)
Paving history: The entire road was paved at the time of designation.
Replaced by: County Road L55, which multiplexed with IA 244 for its entire length

Paving history: Unpaved at designation, the road was gravel at the time of decommissioning (but has since been paved).

Original western terminus: Rhodes
Original eastern terminus: IA 235 in southwestern Marshall County; in 1989 the segment outside of Rhodes was turned over to the county.
Paving history: The entire road was paved at the time of designation.
Replaced by: County Road E63; this replaced IA 235 (II).

Original western terminus: US 61 north of Zwingle; in 1947 it was moved to US 61 at Zwingle after the highway was straightened.

Iowa 247

Original northern terminus: US 30 (later IA 212, now County Road E66) in southeast Tama County
Original southern terminus: Chelsea
Paving history: The entire road was paved at the time of designation.
Replaced by: County road (now numbered V18); it was created after US 30 was rerouted away from Chelsea in July 1931.

Designated: September 14, 1931 Decommissioned: 1980
Original northern terminus: US 20 (pre-freeway alignment, now County Road D22) west of Independence
Original southern terminus: Iowa Mental Health Institute
Paving history: Unpaved at designation, it had a bituminous surface at decommissioning (but has since been paved)
Replaced by: Local road (20th Avenue SW in Independence). For a short time between 1981 and 1983, this road was used as part of a temporary bypass for US 20 truck traffic around Independence until the four-lane segment of US 20 opened between IA 297 and IA 150.

Designated: November 25, 1931 Decommissioned: July 1, 2003
Original northern terminus: Winfield
Original southern terminus: IA 78 in northeastern Henry County
Paving history: Unpaved at designation, it was paved in 1953.
Replaced by: County Road W66; it replaced part of IA 78 after it was extended eastward.

Original northern terminus: US 169/IA 9 in northeastern Kossuth County
Original southern terminus: Lakota
Paving history: The entire road was paved at the time of designation.
Replaced by: Local road (it entered through 3rd Street in Lakota)
Iowa 251
Designated: March 16, 1932 Decommissioned: 1980
Original northern terminus: IA 92 in Bevington; it was moved to I-35 east of St. Charles in 1958.
Original southern terminus: Truro; it was truncated at St. Charles in 1958.
Paving history: Unpaved at designation, the original segment was gravel at the time of decommissioning (but has since been paved). The segment from St. Charles to I-35 was gravel at first but paved by the time I-35 opened.
Replaced by: County Roads R35 and G68 (original route); County Road G50 (at decommissioning)
Iowa 252
Designated: August 1932 (number approved May 24) Decommissioned: July 1, 2003
Original western terminus: The US 61/IA 92 junction in northern Louisa County
Original eastern terminus: Grandview
Paving history: Unpaved at designation, the entire road was paved in 1948.
Replaced by: County Road 252; Louisa County kept the state highway number rather than assimilate it into the county road numbering system. (The 2004 DOT map of Louisa County calls it County Road G48. Nonetheless, there are no county road markers of any kind at that intersection as of October 2006.) IA 252 replaced part of US 61 after it was realigned between Grandview and Wapello.

Original northern terminus: Minnesota state line near Rake
Original southern terminus: IA 9 east of Buffalo Center
Paving history: The entire road was paved at the time of designation.
Replaced by: County Road R20; this replaced IA 322 (I).
Iowa 254 (III)
This was the designation for a former segment of US 218 northwest of Nashua that was bypassed by an Avenue of the Saints segment in 2003. (The segment through Nashua was turned over to the city). The road was turned over to Floyd and Chickasaw counties by the end of 2005.

Original western terminus: IA 60 (later IA 17) on the Kossuth/Hancock county line
Original eastern terminus: Corwith
Paving history: Unpaved at designation, the entire road was paved in 1955.
Replaced by: Local road (1st Street in Corwith). It was created after IA 60 was realigned south of Wesley.

Designated: February 14, 1933 Decommissioned: July 1, 1960
Original northern terminus: Dickens
Original southern terminus: US 18 in eastern Clay County
Paving history: The entire road was paved at the time of designation.
Replaced by: Local road (Main Street in Dickens)
Iowa 258
Designated: February 14, 1933 Decommissioned: July 1, 2003
Original western terminus: Van Wert; it was extended westward to I-35 (exit #22) upon its completion in 1969
Original eastern terminus: US 65 (later US 69) in northern Decatur County
Paving history: Unpaved at designation, the original segment was upgraded from bituminous to paved in 1975. The 1969 extension was entirely paved.
Replaced by: County Road J14
